I enjoyed the experience of reading the book, not least because the subject matter of young men on a journey of self-discovery, would not have been an obvious choice for me.
However, I am pleased to say that I would have missed a wealth of insight into a range of subjects had I not opened this particular cover.
The restrictions of an English suburban upbringing, where expression of feelings, and exploration of sexuality are suppressed, or hidden, must be familiar to the vast majority of us, and yet we perpetuate the repression. Why??
This novel blows open the doors, and in so doing, also introduces us to another world of freedom and open hospitality which few are ever likely to be lucky (or daring) enough to encounter.
Through the thoughts and experiences of Nigel and Mike on their journey of adventure across the campsites of France we are introduced to a lifestyle of simply accepting and enjoying what nature has provided. Seems like a philosophy that could solve many of the problems we face today! And yet, the book is written as a light and entertaining read as we follow their exploits, sometimes agonising with their indecision, and often laughing with Nigel and Mike at their naive wonderment as they learn to accept life in the raw.
A book I would recommend to anyone who likes to broaden their horizons, and understand more about our fellow humans.
